Green bus garage opens in London

Green bus garage opens in London

Date: 15/7/2010

The largest eco-friendly bus garage in the UK has opened in London.

Around 320 buses will be stored in the facility, which features a number of green initiatives, including a wind turbine that will produce ten per cent of the energy required by the unit.

It is hoped the new building will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 27 per cent, compared to a garage constructed with traditional materials.

Managing Director of Surface Transport David Brown said the scheme shows Transport for London's commitment to creating sustainability that delivers financial benefits, as well as improving energy efficiency.

"This vital investment in infrastructure supports the most widely-used form of transport in London, currently delivering 2.2 billion bus passenger journeys each year," he added.

Last week, the government announced more than 150 green buses will join fleets across the country.

Bus operators and councils will have the opportunity to bid for a share of £15 million provided by officials, which can be used towards buying low-carbon versions of the mode of transport.
