Green cars 'will be popular in 2011'

Date: 24/1/2011
Green cars could become a more commonplace sight on the UK's roads in 2011, according to one sector commentator.Neil Wallis, Head of Communications at the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership, says that driving an environmentally-friendly vehicle that produces lower emissions goes "hand-in-hand" with saving money on both fuel and taxes.
"It's a big year and they will certainly grow in popularity. It is also a year in which people will become much [more] familiar with [electric cars]," he predicts.
While Mr Wallis acknowledges that he does not see sales of these vehicles being "huge" because of their price, he points out that consumers will increasingly see the benefits of owning such a motor.
He adds that this year will see road-users becoming more aware that there is a viable alternative to their current car.
Fuel price rises may be a further factor that prompts consumers to consider an electric or hybrid car, with research by moneysupermarket.com recently revealing that five per cent of people say they no longer drive as a result of the tax and duty increases.
