Green Flag offers road safety advice for its busiest day

Date: 21/12/2010

Road safety company Green Flag has this week issued advice to Britons planning to travel during the lead-up to the festive period amid hazardous weather conditions that have included ice and snow.

According to the firm, yesterday (December 20th) was expected to be the busiest day it had ever experienced during December as it braced itself for up to 20,000 calls.

Drivers hitting the roads this week may have not only had to battle the harsh conditions caused by the heavy snow, but also an increase in the number of other vehicles on the road, as people rushed to carry out their shopping or visit friends and family for Christmas.

As a result of this, Head of Green Flag Daniel Robinson said it is likely there will be more break-downs adding to the traffic.

"We advise drivers to stay off the roads for all but essential travel. The varying passability of the roads can mean that even if the roads near you are clear, those on your journey or at your destination may be much worse," he noted, adding that drivers should check the weather before they start their journey.

The AA last week warned that the winter weather is seeing the number of people claiming on their motor insurance increase.
