Green Paper to propose new rules for young drivers

Date: 26/3/2013
A Green Paper that proposes ways to improve safety and reduce the risks faced by young drivers is set to be launched, the (DfT) Department for Transport has confirmed. The plans were announced yesterday (March 25th) at a summit for the motor insurance industry - hosted by the DfT - which outlined a system that would see younger motorists benefit from greater training and lower insurance premiums.
With an overarching aim of enhancing safety and reducing the risk young drivers face on the road, Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin highlighted the importance of providing greater support for adolescent motorists.
"Improving the safety of our young drivers is a real priority and will not only reduce casualties but should also mean a reduction in the sky-high insurance premiums they pay," he said.
Potential plans include a minimum learning period before people are allowed to sit their tests and incentives for young drivers to undergo additional training after obtaining their licence.
