'Green town' could install free electric car charging points

'Green town' could install free electric car charging points

Date: 13/9/2010

A councillor has hailed proposals for electric vehicle charging points in Bury St Edmunds as another step towards becoming an environmentally-friendly town.

The East Anglian Daily Times reported St Edmundsbury Borough Council will decide on Wednesday (September 15th) whether to go ahead with plans to trial two charging stations at a multi-storey car park.

Mark Ereira-Guyer, a Green Party County Councillor, described the initiative as excellent.

"We are known as a really green town. We are moving forward in so many ways," he commented.

Steve Nicholls, Managing Director of Cale BriParc's UK division - which would supply the machines - said the success of the initiative is dependent upon the number of people who purchase electric vehicles.

Under the scheme, the council would cover the electricity bill while motorists would pay for their own parking.

Recently, Aberdeen City Council Leader John Stewart claimed the city is leading the way for environmental measures in Scotland after the local authority set up eight charging stations, according to the Press and Journal.
