Haymarket station to receive £25m upgrade

Date: 22/12/2011
A new station is to be constructed at Haymarket in Edinburgh that will integrate train, tram, bus and taxi services.Worth £25 million, the work is part of the £1 billion Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme, which will begin in 2012 and is being funded by Transport Scotland.
It is the fourth busiest station north of the border and will benefit from a new access bridge with lifts and escalators, a renovated station building and new platform canopies.
Some 350km of the rail network along the central belt will also be electrified as part of the scheme, which will result in more services to reduce journey times and increase capacity between Alloa and Dunblane and Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Transport Minister Keith Brown said: "This investment for Haymarket and electrification takes us one step closer to revolutionising the rail network in central Scotland."
Work will also take place to improve London Bridge train station over the next few years as part of the £6 billion Thameslink programme.
