HGVs advised to prepare for new LEZ rules

Date: 22/9/2011
London's Low Emission Zone (LEZ) will introduce new standards in January 2012 and heavy goods vehicle (HGV) operators are being advised to prepare now. From January 3rd, large vans and minibuses will need to meet specified emissions standards for the first time when driving in the centre of the capital, while the rules for buses, coaches and HGVs will be tightened.
Should they fail to update their fleets so that the vehicles they use within the LEZ fit the necessary criteria, operators could face a fine and will also be required to pay a daily charge.
Transport for London calculates that 150,000 motors will be affected by the changes and reminds people that the LEZ is in force 24 hours a day, seven days a week, right across the centre of the city.
However, some of the major manufacturing companies are offering discounts to operators that need to invest in new vehicles for their fleets that meet the Euro IV standard for particulate matter.
Kulveer Ranger, the Mayor of London's Environment Director, said: "Some options to make vehicles compliant, such as fitting an approved filter, can take up to three months to complete, so I urge those who are affected to take action as soon as possible."
According to the Freight Transport Association, the majority of HGV owners have chosen to replace their current motor with a new model in order to meet the standard, rather than to have their existing truck retrofitted.
