High petrol prices 'forcing drivers to reduce journeys'

Date: 1/3/2012
Many motorists are reducing the number of car journeys they make because of the high price of petrol. This is according to the results of a new survey by Motorpoint, which discovered 80 per cent of respondents were of this mindset.
Fuel prices are now at a record high of 150.9p per litre and British drivers pay the highest fuel tax in Europe.
Managing Director of Motorpoint David Shelton said the government must take action to improve the situation for road users.
"We want people to enjoy owning a car again, without the burden of heavy taxes, which will in turn stimulate the economy," he added.
The AA recently noted the extra leap year weekday on February 29th will generate an additional £56.3 million in fuel duty revenue for the government as more people make journeys to school and work.
Therefore, the authorities have a reason to scrap the planned tax increase on August 1st, the insurer stated.
