High-speed London orbital rail link proposed

Date: 8/8/2013
A new high-speed London orbital rail network has been proposed and described as a priority for the capital.Isabel Dedring, Deputy Mayor for Transport at City Hall said the project, which will see light-rail and tram services introduced in the capital, is under discussion in outer areas.
She explained the additional transport network would be "only an intermediate measure" and will be mainly used to cope with the influx of new arrivals to the city.
The population of London is set to soar to over ten million in the next 20 years and organisations are working hard to reduce overcrowding and congestion.
"Over the longer term, what we need is high-speed public transport connections to tackle congestion and help [outer London] town centres thrive."
The orbital scheme is one of a number proposed for the capital and will form part of a long-term plan for London's transport network, which is due to be published in early 2014.
