Date: 17/1/2012
The Highways Agency has discussed the responsibility it has for improving sustainability on the UK's roads.A Sustainable Development Plan has just been published by the organisation and it explained it has to balance managing Britain's strategic road network with protecting the environment.
Furthermore, the Agency must support economic growth as the routes it maintains carry a third of all vehicle traffic and two-thirds of freight.
Head of Sustainability, Equality and Diversity at the Highways Agency Dean Kerwick-Chrisp said the Sustainable Development Plan "sets out how we want to work together with our suppliers and others to ensure the impact of the roads we are responsible for is kept as low as possible."
He added that routes must also support environmentally-friendly growth and encourage a good quality of life for communities.
The Agency recently revealed 82.7 per cent of journeys on motorways and A roads in Britain were made 'on time' in the year to November 2011.
