Highways Agency to help bank holiday drivers

Date: 23/8/2011
Roadworks on routes managed by the Highways Agency will be completed or suspended ahead of this coming bank holiday weekend (August 27th to 29th).In an attempt to ensure drivers are able to make their journeys in good time and to help keep traffic moving, the group has announced that 95 miles' worth of construction will be put on hold until the end of the national holiday.
Meanwhile, some 365 miles of roadworks will be finished before the start of the break in order to ensure that motorways and other routes are able to provide the additional capacity necessary.
As a result, 99 per cent of trunk routes and motorways in England will be free of construction, meaning all lanes should be open and there will not be as many speed restrictions.
Roads Minister Mike Penning says: "The main holiday routes have been busy throughout the school holidays and the Highways Agency has worked hard to keep these flowing - as well as providing live traffic updates from its control centres."
Indeed, the group announced in July that it had signed an agreement with satnav manufacturer TomTom that will see it deliver up-to-date traffic information to the devices.
