How long until London is the EV capital of Europe?

How long until London is the EV capital of Europe?

Date: 12/7/2011

In May 2009, Mayor of London Boris Johnson pledged that the city would one day be the electric vehicle (EV) capital of Europe.

Today (July 12th), the London Assembly's Environment Committee will discuss what progress has been made to this end, including consulting on problems standing in the way of this achievement.

These include the apparent reluctance among Britons to switch from conventionally fuelled cars to EVs.

Kulveer Ranger, the Mayor's Director of Environment, will attend the meeting, where he will answer questions on the proposed development of an EV network in the city and what economic benefits this would deliver.

Nick Fairholme, Interim Director of Congestion Charging and Traffic Enforcement at Transport for London, will also speak at the event, along with Catherine Hutt, a Business Development Manager at the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Under the Mayor's Electric Vehicle Delivery Plan, Mr Johnson pledged that as many as 100,000 EVs would hit the roads of London as soon as possible, while by 2015 some 25,000 charging points will have been installed.
