How the automobile sector can help revive the economy

Date: 21/9/2011
The UK's competitiveness on the global stage can be enhanced through its automotive manufacturing sector.Such is the claim of Paul Everitt, Chief Executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, whose message is set to be delivered over the next three weeks at fringe events taking place during the party conferences of the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and Labour.
The organisation is keen to secure cross-party support for driving investment into areas within the new car industry including research and development, machinery and training.
Mr Everitt notes that the UK has the chance to create economic growth and lead the way towards a low-carbon future if measures are taken to encourage the injection of private sector finance in the sector.
He adds: "There are now real opportunities to strengthen the UK supply base and bring new investment into fast emerging ultra-low carbon technologies."
The Liberal Democrat party conference ends today (September 21st), while Labour's is scheduled to start on September 25th and the Conservatives' on October 2nd.
