HS2 plans adapted to include tunnel under West London

Date: 24/4/2013
Proposals that would have seen 18 bridges knocked down to cater for the HS2 line have been reviewed, with the project's organisers now planning on constructing an eight-mile tunnel under West London instead. As the Evening Standard reports, local MPs and campaigners opposed the original plans, arguing that they would cause five years of disruption in the west of the capital.
And the authorities tasked with the HS2 project have said that the revised proposals will cause fewer problems in the area.
Ealing Central and Acton MP Angie Bray praised the moved, saying: "This really does lift a massive blight off a number of constituents and businesses on that route."
The new plans will now be consulted on and submitted to Transport Secretary Partick McLoughlin for approval.
The eight-mile stretch will be the longest tunnel on the route from Euston to Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester if it is given the green light.
