HS2 to look into high-speed rail route extensions

Date: 12/3/2010
The government has asked HS2 to look into developing proposals for extensions of a high-speed railway to Birmingham to Manchester and to Leeds. The request follows transport minister Lord Adonis's announcement yesterday (March 11th) proposals for a high-speed rail network linking London to Birmingham, Manchester, the east Midlands, Sheffield and Leeds.
HS2, the company established by the government to advise on the high-speed rail services, recommended a route for the network and public consultation on the route is to be launched by the company.
Lord Adonis commented on the plans: "Over the next 20 to 30 years the UK will require a step-change in transport capacity and connectivity both to promote and respond to long-term economic growth.
"However, this must be delivered sustainably, without unacceptable environmental impacts and in line with the government's strategy to promote a low carbon economy."
The public consultation will allow people to share their views on the line, particularly those who may be affected by it.
