Hundreds of Pune school transport operators fined in space of 2 days

Date: 8/7/2013
More than 500 school transport operators in the Indian city of Pune have been fined for not having valid permits - and all in the space of two days.As the Times of India reports, operators have been found guilty of failing to obtain the necessary documentation in order to comply with school bus policy - and police say that the enforcement drive is set to continue.
The move is a result of the authorities looking to clampdown on services which carry more children than they are permitted to, with the likes of rickshaws, vans and mini buses said to be operating without the necessary clearance.
Citizens group Pedestrians First has been calling on the relevant bodies to tackle school transport issues recently, arguing that "good fortune" is the only reason why there have not been accidents, serious injuries or fatalities as operators have continued to flout regulations when driving pupils.
