Date: 18/2/2013
Cyclists in the Indian city of Hyderabad have taken to the roads as part of a rally designed to celebrate the benefits of eco-friendly ways to commute. As the Deccan Chronicle reports, a range of corporate employees and students were involved in the Hyderabad Metro Connects 2013 event, with the benefits of cycling and travelling by Metro Rail being the focus of the day.
"This is for the people, by the people, and of the people," said IT Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah. "And what better way to highlight this than by getting citizens on our very old and trusted mode of transportation - cycling."
The cyclists rode to Uppal from Hitech City, where a bike station has been launched to encourage residents to ride to work.
While the main emphasis of the project is to reduce pollution and traffic, the authorities are also hoping that it will improve people's health as an increasing number take to cycling.
