Hydrogen's potential 'yet to be met'

Hydrogen's potential 'yet to be met'

Date: 2/2/2012

Hydrogen has the potential to become a major form of fuel technology, but there are still some issues that need to be resolved before widespread adoption can take place.

This is according to Ben Lane of Next Green Car, who explained work is being done to improve hydrogen car infrastructure around the UK, notably in the area surrounding the M4, where projects are underway in order to turn the motorway into the country's "hydrogen highway".

However, he noted there are concerns over the long-term sustainability of the fuel cell stacks used in cars, stating: "Fuel cell life isn't yet long enough for a vehicle to last, say 15 years."

"I think you can consider hydrogen fuel cells to be a future extension of current electric vehicles," he concluded.

Adoption of electric-powered cars in London has been slow, with just 0.08 per cent of total cars in the capital running on this form of fuel, according to a new report from the London Assembly's Environment Committee.
