IAM offers safety tips for driving in winter

Date: 21/10/2011
With winter around the corner, safety on the roads during difficult weather conditions is an important thing to note. The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has offered some advice from Britain's top advanced driver, Peter Rodger, on correct braking and working out stopping distances in tough climates.
When braking, he says: "Don't underestimate how long it actually takes you to stop". If travelling at 30mph, it will take 23 meters to come to a complete stop and travelling at 50mph will double this distance to 53 meters.
Drivers should remain aware of traffic ahead and leave at least two seconds between them and the car in front, doubling that time when conditions are wet.
Investing in winter tyres is also important as they help keep grip when normal tyres begin to stiffen at temperatures of seven degrees and under. However research from Manheim Auctions has shown that 95.5 per cent of motorists are not considering this option, which may lead to higher accident numbers on the road.
IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger said: "Breaking is a skill that needs practice- do it properly and you'll improve fuel consumption and journey times."
