IAM welcomes reduction of transport red tape

Date: 16/12/2011
The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has welcomed the government's decision to do away with some of the regulations currently in place within the UK's transport industry. It was announced by the Department for Transport yesterday that it will be removing or improving 142 road transport regulations as part of its Road Transport Red Tape Challenge.
Chief Executive of the IAM Simon Best said this is good news for the UK's motorists.
In particular, he said he was pleased with the improvements to Statutory off Road Notification, which mean individuals will no longer receive fines for failing to inform the DVLA of something the organisation already knows.
However, Mr Best suggested proposing the removal of the driver Certificate for Professional Competence (CPC) in certain sectors could have a negative impact on highway safety.
"We suggest that the department clarifies which drivers still require the driver CPC at the earliest opportunity and encourage those drivers who do need to do periodic training to get started," the expert stated.
