Illegally using mobiles while driving 'will affect insurance premiums'

Date: 13/2/2012
Using a mobile phone while behind the wheel could compromise a driver's safety, as well as affect their insurance premium, an expert has explained.A spokeswoman for insurance provider Admiral Group stated two-fifths of motorists are distracted by changing a CD or the radio when in their car.
While research shows six per cent have used their mobile phone when on the road, one-fifth admit they get distracted by their satnav or changing the temperature inside their vehicle.
The spokeswoman said that "using a hand-held mobile phone while driving is illegal and if caught, you can expect to get penalty points on your driving licence and a fine."
Individuals will then have to inform their insurance provider, which is likely to affect their premium.
TRL research has shown significantly poorer driving performance (speed control and response time) if using a mobile phone while driving.
