Inchyra rail crossing closes after construction of new road link

Date: 17/2/2012
A new road link has been created in the Carse of Gowrie to divert traffic away from the Inchyra rail crossing. This has now become the first public level crossing to close in Scotland this century as part of a wider initiative to reduce the number of such barriers.
The new road links Inchyra and St Madoes and includes 1,100 metres of single carriageway with passing places and protected public utilities.
Network Rail's Route Managing Director for Scotland David Simpson explained the misuse of level crossings seriously compromises the safety of the public.
"The closure of Inchyra shows what can be done to remove crossings from the network and is a great example of a local authority and Network Rail working together to improve public safety," he added.
Network Rail only introduces new crossings into the rail network when it is absolutely necessary and states it is committed to introducing new safety features at the barriers where needed.
