Increased capacity 'biggest benefit' of HS2

Date: 8/2/2013

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin has told rail industry experts that the biggest benefit of HS2 will be increased capacity on the network.

As ITV News reports, Mr McLoughlin explained to the Derby and Derbyshire Rail Forum that while the reduction in journey times between the destinations to be served by the line is a bonus, the greatest advantage will be a reduction in overcrowding on trains.

The Secretary also apologised for his department's mistakes on the West Coast mainline contract, but added that steps had been taken to rectify the situation.

What's more, Mr McLoughlin revealed his intention to improve Sunday rail services as he further outlined his priorities for public transport.

HS2 has again hit the headlines in recent weeks after the unveiling of plans for the second phase of the project, with politicians and business leaders in North Staffordshire calling for a station to be built in the county that could be served by the route.
