Individuals 'need to take responsibility for seatbelts'

Date: 4/10/2010

A new road safety campaign has been launched to urge people to wear a seatbelt during every journey.

The Yorkshire Post reports the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership has initiated the Save Yourself project after statistics published by the Department for Transport revealed 300 lives could be saved each year if seatbelts were worn on every journey.

Chief Inspector Stuart Walne, Head of Roads Policing at South Yorkshire Police, said the number of people who die on the roads because they are not strapped in is "unacceptable".

"Our campaign highlights that it is everyone's responsibility to consider their own safety and wear a seatbelt," he continued.

Mr Walne added it is "vital" individuals do so as it could save their lives.

Last month, the Press and Journal reported police officers across Scotland found 313 people who were not wearing seatbelts during a 24-hour crackdown, which the country's Association of Chief Police Officers described as evidence of road users showing a disregard for their own safety.
