Inexperienced drivers 'need to be more cautious in autumn'

Date: 12/11/2010

Few people are aware of the numerous hazards on the roads that make autumn the most dangerous time of year for driving.

That is according to the Driving Instructors Association, which stated the season is particularly treacherous for new motorists, who may never have experienced such weather conditions.

Steve Garrod, Group Manager at the organisation, said the main problems include dazzle caused by low sun - which drivers can help prevent by ensuring their windscreen is spotless - and puddles, which can be surprisingly deep and may cause people to lose control of their vehicles.

Leaves on the road are also a risk, as they often cover road markings and make wet highways even more slippery, he explained.

New drivers "need to be far more aware of road conditions and their surroundings in the autumn than they can possibly realise," Mr Garrod remarked, adding they should be more observant and cautious.

A similar issue was raised recently by TyreSafe, which advised motorists to fit winter weather tyres to their cars in order to improve road safety over the coming months.
