Insurance 'must be reduced' for learner drivers using family cars

Insurance 'must be reduced' for learner drivers using family cars

Date: 20/4/2012

It should be cheaper for young people to learn to drive in the family car.

This is according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), which has called for insurers to reduce premiums for those who have not passed their test but want to practice on the roads.

"Learner drivers are as safe as any other group on the road - the risks only rise when solo driving begins," explained Director of Policy and Research at the IAM Neil Greig.

Indeed, figures released by Admiral found people are more likely to make a car insurance claim in the first year after passing their test than when they are learning.

This number was higher among females than males, as women were 4.5 times more likely to make a claim, compared with 2.2 per cent of men.

Mr Greig also suggested the introduction of insurance discounts for young motorists who decide to undertake further training after passing their test, as research shows many new drivers would happily have extra coaching.
