Intelligent tyres 'a few years away'

Date: 27/4/2010
Intelligent tyres that can communicate with a car's electronic systems could be available within three years, it has been claimed.Schrader Electronics, a developer of automotive sensors, has argued that such a development would allow for a "revolution" in traction technology.
Tyre pressure monitoring systems first introduced the concept of electronic sensors in a tyre to the market, the organisation said, noting that they have since been proven to benefit both safety and fuel efficiency.
Data can be transmitted to a car's other electronic features such as ABS and ESP to provide information about tread depth, pressure and temperature, as well as details about load and readings of available grip to offer optimum control of a vehicle, the organisation said.
The company has confirmed it is working with Pirelli to develop a tyre capable of providing such information to a car, and hopes that it can be brought to market in 2013.
Keeping tyres at their optimal pressure can bring a number of benefits for road users, offering increased fuel efficiency and better levels of control.
