Investment 'needed' in London's transport system

Date: 9/7/2010
Businesses in London would benefit from upgraded Tube and Crossrail services. That is the view of Mayor Boris Johnson, who made the comments when speaking at the Confederation of British Industry.
He warned slashing vital investment in the capital's transport system would damage the UK economy and hurt firms based in the city.
"The longer it takes to upgrade the Tube and deliver Crossrail the more it will cost and the less competitive our great city will be," he added.
Mr Johnson noted the transport system needs to be protected to allow London to attract investments, which will in turn lead to jobs.
He also stated the economic recovery will be devastated if the transport system infrastructure in the capital is not boosted.
Last month, Transport for London announced passengers travelling by boat on the River Thames will be given "Tube-style" maps, free 15-minute Wi-Fi access and clearer signs listing the services available.
