Ireland announces overhaul of rural transport services

Date: 11/7/2013
The Republic of Ireland Transport Minister Alan Kelly has unveiled a number of changes to the operation of rural transport services in the country. As a result of the reforms, the 35 companies which currently handle the network will be replaced with 18 fresh co-ordination units - known as TCUs - that will co-ordinate services in designated areas.
According to Ireland's Department of Transport, the motivation behind the move is to give local government greater responsibility for rural transport as part of a nationwide improvement programme.
Commenting on the move, Mr Kelly said: "These reforms represent a new start for rural transport in Ireland and will enhance the transport offering right across the country."
He added that the idea is for the new measures to become "a permanent and lasting" figure of Ireland's public transport network in the coming years as the changes are rolled out among local services across the nation.
