Keighley 'driving to improve road safety'

Date: 7/4/2011
Police officers in the Yorkshire town of Keighley have been cracking down on motorists found to be in violation of road safety rules.According to the Keighley News, this was one of the initial steps of an initiative designed to make the community's roads safer.
Now, officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Team (NTP) have started to visit schools in the area to educate children on the dangers of playing near to moving cars.
Some pupils have already had the opportunity to measure how fast passing vehicles were travelling by using a laser speed gun.
As part of officers' efforts to make roads safer, five drivers have been handed fixed penalty notices after being spotted not wearing a seatbelt, while one motorist received a notice after being caught going through a red light.
Inspector Wayne Horner, of Keighley NPT, said: "It is disappointing that we have had to stop motorists for jumping red lights and for continuing to not use seatbelts and those who flout the law in this respect should be warned they are both endangering their safety and potentially their driving licences."
Meanwhile, Northern Ireland's Road Safety Minister Edwin Poots will re-sit a mock driving test today (April 7th) as part of an initiative from Road Safety Awareness NI.
