Key route into Liverpool city centre 'to receive upgrade'

Key route into Liverpool city centre 'to receive upgrade'

Date: 24/3/2010

A key route between Wirral and Liverpool city centre is to benefit from £70 million of government investment, the Department for Transport has announced.

The Bidston Moss Viaduct will have its structure strengthened, meaning that the current weight limit restricting vehicles using the outside lane of the centre structure to 3.5 tonnes will be lifted.

As a result, heavier vehicles will be able to use all lanes, which could improve traffic flow for all motorists.

The viaduct connects the M53 and local Wirral roads to the Kingsway Tunnel.

Transport minister Paul Clark noted: "More than £66 million of government money will be spent on strengthening the viaduct's structure.

"I welcome this partnership work between my department, local authorities and the Highways Agency."

Work will start in May this year and is expected to be complete by spring 2012.

Meanwhile, those looking to avoid congested areas around Liverpool could consider using the new app for iPhone users from the Highways Agency, which offers motorists travel updates and helps them to plan routes.
