King's Cross western concourse complete

Date: 20/3/2012

A £550 million project to transform part of King's Cross train station in London is complete.

The western concourse has been upgraded with a new roof structure to significantly increase the size of the space, which will help to reduce congestion and improve accessibility.

More than 45 million passengers travel through London every year and the development has also resulted in improved links to St Pancras station and the London Underground.

Larger destination boards have been installed, as well as more shops and restaurants and a clearer announcement system.

Network Rail's Programme Director for King's Cross Ian Fry said: "Research tells us that passengers consistently rate high-quality facilities alongside convenient retail and catering as important station priorities."

The work is part of a wider project to upgrade King's Cross, which has cost £2.5 billion over the past ten years.

This latest construction scheme has been completed in time for the London Olympic Games this summer and over 5,000 people worked on the initiative to update the Grade I listed train station.
