Learner drivers 'should pass test before using motorways'

Learner drivers 'should pass test before using motorways'

Date: 20/2/2012

Allowing learner drivers to use motorways before they have passed their test could affect the safety of other motorists.

This is according to the Road Haulage Association (RHA), which said it is concerned about plans to introduce such a change.

Instead, the organisation believes there should be specialist motorway training given to learner drivers before they are allowed to use the network.

"We would also welcome the mandatory use of green P-Plates for newly qualified drivers and consider that their use should be included in the New Drivers Act," RHA Chief Executive Geoff Dunning said.

He claimed this is a "simple, safe and cost-effective" way of showing who new drivers are so other motorists can be aware of their presence.

The Driving Standards Agency recently announced practical driving tests will once again take place in Warrington from March 5th after the town's test centre closed down in 2008.

Initially, exams will run from Paddington House Hotel on Manchester Road.
