LEGO Tube maps celebrate 150-year anniversary of London Underground

Date: 13/6/2013
Tube maps constructed entirely out of LEGO bricks have been unveiled at five London Underground stations as a means to celebrate the network's 150-year anniversary. Each of the maps represents the Tube at different stages throughout its history, and they are located in King's Cross St Pancras, Stratford, Green Park, Piccadilly Circus and South Kensington.
The LEGO structures were unveiled yesterday (June 12th) and will be on display throughout the summer months, with the map at South Kensington being based on what the Tube network looked like in 1927.
A second in Piccadilly Circus reflects the original map design produced by Harry Beck in 1933, while at Green Park visitors will see a 1968 view of the London Underground setup.
Stratford's LEGO creation shows the current outline of the Tube's various services, and the one found at King's Cross St Pancras presents an image of what the network will look like in 2020 based on existing upgrade plans - including Crossrail and the proposed Crossrail 2 project, as well as the potential Northern Line extension.
Design and Heritage Manager at London Underground Mike Ashworth said: "I'm sure our customers of all ages and backgrounds will enjoy looking at the five different LEGO maps that show the history and development of the Underground.
"The Tube network, like the famous Underground map, has constantly evolved to support London's growth and prosperity."
All of the five maps are made up of more than 1,000 LEGO bricks each, and all measure 140cm x 100cm. Each map took four days to build, with the UK's only Certified LEGO Professional, Duncan Titmarsh, being responsible for their creation.
