Lib Dems outline transport policy

Date: 9/12/2009
Finding new ways to get foreign hauliers to "pay their way" on Britain's roads will form a central plank of the Liberal Democrats' transport manifesto for the next election, it has been confirmed.According to RoadTransport.com, the party's transport spokesman Norman Baker is keen to ensure that foreign hauliers working in the UK pay their fair share of taxes, so that British-based hauliers are not undercut in their own market place.
Mr Baker asked a series of questions in the House of Commons recently relating to the haulage industry and found that there remain a considerable number of British hauliers going out of business as the recession continues to bite.
The MP also explained that road pricing would feature in the Liberal Democrats' manifesto, as part of an effort to curb congestion on Britain's roads and encourage greater use of public transport facilities.
Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Conservative party are all beginning to outline their plans for the future of Britain ahead of the general election, which must be held in the first half of next year.
