Local authorities to publish speed camera results

Date: 27/6/2011
The UK public will be able to examine the results of speed cameras for the first time and make their own judgement on how effective the technology is in improving road safety.Local authorities have been requested by the Department for Transport to publish data relating to casualty and collision figures at camera sites from both before and after the items were installed.
Meanwhile, police groups will make public the number of prosecutions that have been brought on speeding offenders as a result of the traps, along with information on the punishments dealt out.
Road Safety Minister Mike Penning said: "We want to improve accountability and make sure that the public are able to make informed judgements about the decisions made on their behalf."
He added that as taxpayers' money has been spent on installing speed cameras, Britons have a right to know how effective they are.
In January, a group was set up by the department to discuss what information relating to this technology should be made public and what should not, with police officers and local and central government figures all making up the team.
