Local transport improvement projects 'coming closer to reality'

Local transport improvement projects 'coming closer to reality'

Date: 25/3/2011

Plans designed by four local authorities to improve their current transport networks have all been given the go-ahead to move to the next stage of the funding approval process, it has been revealed.

Following the announcement that more than 21 per cent of cost savings have been recognised by the councils during the Spending Review period, the Department for Transport notes that the schemes are getting closer to becoming a reality.

These include maintenance improvements for highways in Sheffield, Hounslow and the Isle of Wight, along with the extension of a tram network in Nottingham.

Norman Baker, the Transport Minister, asserted that the government is committed to delivering sustainable and effective high-quality travel networks across the UK.

Indeed, this week's Budget pledged to commit £30 billion towards transport projects during the next four years, including £200 million of new funding for rail schemes.

"By vigorously pursuing cost reductions we can invest in a greater number of key local infrastructure projects, which help boost the economy and jobs thanks to the benefits these projects provide in their local areas," Mr Baker said.
