Logistics operators 'on track to meet CO2 targets'

Logistics operators 'on track to meet CO2 targets'

Date: 1/2/2012

Efficiency improvements mean logistics operators are on target to meet their greenhouse gas reduction targets in spite of the difficult economic climate.

A total of 59 firms are now signed up to the Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme, which is managed by the Freight Transport Association (FTA) and records carbon emissions and helps firms bring down their output.

Emissions intensity was reduced by 2.6 per cent in 2010, according to the latest report and the overall aim is a reduction of eight per cent by 2012.

Managing Director of Policy and Communications at the FTA James Hookham noted participants are continuing to invest in carbon saving methods, despite pressures brought on by the "current tough trading times."

"Scheme participants can be proud of their achievement so far," he remarked, adding the government, which endorsed the initiative last April, should be "satisfied" with how it is progressing.

Carbon reduction is a key aim for the Government, which has recently extended its plug-in grant to apply to vans in a bid to encourage fleets to purchase small commercial vehicles that run on electricity.
