London 'achieving road safety goals'

London 'achieving road safety goals'

Date: 21/6/2010

The number of people killed or seriously injured (KSI) on the roads of London is falling, new research has shown.

According to the figures, released last week (June 18th) by Mayor of the city Boris Johnson and Transport for London (TfL), the proportion of individuals who were hurt or fatally injured while driving over the past 12 months dropped by eight per cent.

The statistic corresponds to 299 fewer incidents than in 2008.

Furthermore, the data showed the capital has already beaten the targets it set for the end of 2010, with a 52 per cent reduction in KSIs on its roads compared to ten years ago.

Its original goal was to cut the number of KSIs by 50 per cent over the course of a decade.

Commenting on the news, Mr Johnson said: "To see that the amount of people who have been killed or seriously injured cut by half in around a decade reflects the significant effort that has been put into improving road safety."

The development follows news motorcyclists are set to be permitted access to red route bus lanes in London as part of TfL's Motorcycles in Bus Lanes trial.
