London Bridge station development plans gain approval

Date: 4/4/2012
Plans to redevelop London Bridge train station have been given the green light. The purpose of the initiative is to remove current congestion and allow more services to pass through the transport hub.
New street level entrances will also be introduced on Tooley Street and St Thomas Street to make it easier for passengers to access the station.
The initiative is due for completion in 2018 and the station will remain open for the duration of the construction work.
Chief Executive of Network Rail David Higgins explained the project is a "critical" part of the £6 billion Thameslink programme that will allow 12-car trains to operate "at a metro-frequency".
"As well as bringing a better rail service to Southwark, we hope that the construction programme itself will help support the local community," he added.
Improvements at King's Cross station in London have recently been completed and the £550 million, five-year project has seen the creation of a new roof structure and more retail outlets.
