London buses to help tackle pollution

Date: 19/8/2011
Transport for London (TfL) has announced that Eminox and HJS have been awarded contracts to install new carbon-reduction equipment on a number of buses in the capital.Eighteen of the vehicles will benefit from the new nitrogen oxide and nitrogen dioxide-reducing Selective Catalytic Reduction solution, which uses urea to convert poisonous nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water.
Mike Weston, London Buses Operations Director, said that the capital already has one of the cleanest bus fleets in Europe and this new technology will only work to further improve its standing as a pioneer of greener public transport.
He added: "London continues to work hard to find ways to improve the emissions and environmental performance of the bus fleet."
By 2015, all buses in the capital are expected to meet European IV standards for nitrogen oxide and dioxide emissions as part of Mayor of London Boris Johnson's Air Quality Strategy.
Last month, the Mayor's Barclays Cycle Hire initiative celebrated its first birthday. The scheme is part of the city's overarching goal of slashing carbon emissions and pollution.
