London commuters could plan journey on phones

Date: 19/8/2011
An update to Transport for London's (TfL) voice recognition route planning service could encourage people to forgo their cars when travelling across the capital. The service is designed to help commuters plan their journeys and now includes postcode and station name recognition.
TfL has also incorporated a number of key London landmarks, so tourists can get to their desired destinations quickly and easily.
What's more, the government organisation has added SMS capabilities to the journey planner so people can text for directions - including the best routes by rail, bus, tube or on foot.
Ian Henderson, TfL's Director of Group Customer Services, said that the facility is now faster, more comprehensive and much more accessible thanks to the new SMS capabilities.
He added: "The enhanced voice recognition technology will mean callers can pinpoint locations and destinations more quickly."
Sustainable mobility is also a concern for ACFO, one of the leading fleet decision-making organisations, which recently released an in-depth guide to journey planning.
From A to B: The ACFO Guide to Journey Planning aims to leverage existing transport infrastructure while reducing its impact on the environment.
