Date: 22/11/2010
London's Barclay's Cycle Hire scheme has been honoured with an accolade for promoting two-wheeled transport in the capital. The project was awarded the London Cycling Campaign prize for the Best Cycling Facility, which was accepted by Mick Hackford, Head of Projects at Transport for London.
He said it was an honour to collect the accolade on behalf of everyone who has made the initiative possible, adding he is delighted that the freedom it gives to its users has been recognised.
Kulveer Ranger, the Mayor of London's Transport Adviser, commented: "The scheme has outstripped all of our expectations, is hugely popular and already very successful. I'm looking forward to seeing the scheme continue to grow and develop over the coming years."
Work began earlier this month on a new docking station for the project, which will be its biggest so far - with space for 124 bikes - and will be located close to the main entrance of Waterloo station.
