London sees record-breaking week for bus journeys

Date: 17/5/2013
An estimated 49.5 million journeys were made on London buses between April 28th and May 4th as passengers set a new record for bus travel in the capital over the course of a week.Indeed, the figures mean that as many bus journeys are made in the capital each week as in the rest of England combined.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson praised the achievement, highlighting the efficiency of the network and the emphasis on maintaining the vehicles that make up the fleet.
"Without the efficient movement of people that the network allows London could simply not function as it does - driving the UK economy as it emerges from recession," he said.
Leon Daniels, Managing Director of Surface Transport at Transport for London, added that the continued rise of London's population means that it is "absolutely essential" for an extensive and affordable bus network to be available to both residents and visitors.
