London has 'no overall strategy for transport'

Date: 1/10/2009
London is in danger of ignoring the travel problems that those living in the city face every day. That is the finding of a study by the RAC Foundation, which discovered that an emphasis on new cycle lanes and buses is blinkering the mayor to bigger issues.
Professor Stephen Glaister, director of the RAC Foundation, said that there is currently "no overall strategy for transport in London".
"This isn't about politics and to some extent Boris Johnson is a victim of history he has to take a long-term, strategic view of transport and we hope this will be reflected in his draft London plan when it is published," he said.
Suggestions made by the report include making sure that accident clear-ups have a better balance between evidence gathering and keeping London moving and increasing the amount of evidence-based transport initiatives.
The Crossrail project, which will connect Heathrow Airport to the East of London and beyond, is currently being built in the city and it is hoped it will be completed by 2017.
