London Underground workers strike over roster dispute

Date: 5/2/2010
Hundreds of London Underground maintenance workers went on strike this morning over a protest concerning rosters and outsourcing of work, it has been reported. The industrial action by members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union is the first of a series of planned 24-hour strikes due to take place from 06:45 every Sunday from February 14th.
Lines affected include the Bakerloo, Victoria and Central Line services.
However, a spokesperson for Transport for London stated this morning that good services were operating across the network this morning despite the industrial action.
The union is striking over a dispute concerning overtime payments for maintenance shifts and fears of redundancies following outsourcing of some work to other firms.
According to the RMT, 90 per cent of staff voted in favour of the strikes.
RMT leader Bob Crow said: "Our members are rock solid in their support for this strike and in their determination to defend their jobs and working conditions."
