Londoners asked for views as Crossrail 2 consultation opens

Date: 14/5/2013
Residents of the capital have been asked for their opinions on the Crossrail 2 project that will see the introduction of a new rail link between North and South London, with (TfL) Transport for London and Network Rail launching a public consultation today (May 14th).A potential Metro route would see services run from Wimbledon to Alexandra Palace - stopping at key stations such as Clapham Junction, Victoria and Euston - while a regional option would see this extended into Surrey in the south and Hertfordshire in the north.
The idea is that the line will have interconnections with Crossrail 1 and High Speed 1 and 2 once all become operational, with the Crossrail 2 route also expected to ease congestion in certain areas of the Underground network.
Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, urged residents of the capital to come forward with their thoughts on the proposals in order to allow the Crossrail 2 project to advance to the next stage.
"Crossrail is set to revolutionise travel in the capital, and with a predicted ten million people expected to be living in London by 2031, pressing ahead with the next stage of the plan, Crossrail 2, is quite simply essential," he explained.
"That's why I am sending out a rallying cry for the public's support for this consultation - come and share your views so we can progress with Crossrail 2 as soon as possible."
Running from now until August 2nd, the consultation aims to establish the level of support for Crossrail 2 while at the same time gain an understanding of where the public wants the route to serve.
David Higgins, Network Rail Chief Executive, added that the number of rail passengers in the capital is expected to grow by 30 per cent in the next 20 years, and that preparing for the future as soon as possible will be vital to avoiding any potential issues in the coming decades.
