Longer trains introduced between Cambridge and Liverpool Street

Longer trains introduced between Cambridge and Liverpool Street

Date: 13/12/2011

Longer trains with more seats are now running between Cambridge and Liverpool Street.

The improved services were introduced yesterday (December 12th) and follow the construction of two new platforms at Cambridge that enable it to accommodate 12-car trains.

As part of the £16.7 million scheme, a new island platform was added along with a 15-tonne footbridge and lifts to connect it to the rest of the station.

This should improve future services as it means trains will not have to wait for other carriages to leave the station upon arrival.

Rail Minister Theresa Villiers described the changes as "great news" for travellers and revealed an additional 2,700 carriages will be added to the route by May 2019.

"These vital improvements will support economic growth and make life better for passengers," she continued.

Network Rail recently announced it will be carrying out upgrades to the UK's train network over the Christmas and New Year period, although the majority of routes will remain open.
