Loughborough MP praised for school transport safety initiative

Date: 9/3/2012
An MP has been commended for her commitment to improving school transport.Brake and Direct Line have named Loughborough MP Nicky Morgan as their Road Safety Parliamentarian of the Month after she launched a nationwide campaign to ensure children are protected on their journey to classes.
She established the initiative after Leicestershire County Council withdrew a bus service taking pupils to Humphrey Perkins School in Barrow upon Soar in 2011, despite claims from parents and the head teacher that pupils would not be safe if they walked along the route.
Earlier this year, Ms Morgan discussed the issue during a debate in Parliament, at which the Education Minister agreed new policies are required on school transport.
Deputy Chief Executive at Brake Julie Townsend said: "We must do more … to enable children to travel safely to school and in their local community without their lives being endangered."
In January, Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn received the Road Safety Parliamentarian of the Month award for her campaign to introduce regular eye tests for drivers.
