Low temperatures bring ice risk for motorists

Date: 3/2/2012
Motorists need to be wary of the increased risk of ice as temperatures continue to fall across the UK.Much of the country is currently experiencing freezing temperatures and the Highways Agency has warned drivers to be careful on the roads, as ice can form even without rainfall.
Jason Glasson of the body's winter team said drivers need to ensure they allow extra time to prepare on a cold morning. A bright, low sun can dazzle drivers if their windscreen is still partially frosted when they pull away and Mr Glasson urged: "Don't drive off until you and your car are ready."
Exposed roads and under bridges are two areas susceptible to icy conditions and the Agency expects this week to be one of the busiest of the winter for its fleet of gritters.
The Met Office has issued a level three cold weather alert for all areas of England, warning daytime temperatures will hit no more than two to three degrees C, with the temperature dropping as low as minus ten degrees C overnight.
